As part of the master’s program in Multimedia Graphic Design, a module is offered that combines practical training and critical reflection on the challenges of working as a graphic designer. Based on a collective exploration of critical texts and hands-on exercises related to contracts, estimates, invoices, and positioning vis-à-vis clients, the “Economic Self-Defense” module features a series of talks by professionals engaged in these issues.

Olivier Bertrand is a graphic designer, publisher, and instructor at 75 in Brussels. He is the founder of the magazine La Perruque and the publishing house Surfaces Utiles—which notably published the delightful How to Survive After Art School. Even during his studies, economic considerations were a major focus of his reflections on his work. La Perruque, a magazine dedicated to typographic specimens, collects paper scraps left over from printing production and transforms them into playgrounds for typeface designers, rather than throwing them away. The event will be an opportunity to discuss survival strategies (and ways to find joy) in the field of design and publishing, while offering a Belgian perspective on the situation of designers and artists in France.

Founded in 2018, the Atelier Téméraire is a collective of graphic designers and artists that engages in editorial practices focused on social criticism, the archiving of revolutionary movements, anarchism, and graphic design as a political tool. The Atelier publishes self-funded works printed via screen printing, risography, or laser printers. Their presentation will build upon the one they presented at Le Signe—International Center for Graphic Design in 2021: “For Networks of Solidarity,” dedicated to exploring the delicate balance the collective strikes between commissions, activist dynamics, and editorial or research activities. The collective’s questions, associative approaches, and the solidarity required by the collective practice of design will be at the heart of their proposal.
